In exciting news for the Cal State LA community, Mike Garrett has recently been hired as the executive director of athletics. He previously was athletics director at Langston University in Oklahoma, and prior to that led athletics at the University of Southern California for 17 years.

Garrett grew up in East LA and Boyle Heights, near Cal State LA. In high school he visited the campus often to play sports and study. He attended Roosevelt High School and then USC, and was a star athlete throughout school. Garrett was drafted three times by Major League Baseball teams.

At a ceremony on campus near the Physical Education facility, President Covino welcomed Garrett to campus along with the student body, staff and faculty, and community members. Garrett spoke of his appreciation for the people of East LA who mentored him when he was growing up, and stated that he appreciates the opportunity to “give something back” to the community. His goal is to “win and graduate student athletes who will do good things in life.” We look forward to seeing his accomplishments at Cal State LA.
