The MORE Programs at Cal State LA are being recognized nationally by the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics. This White House initiative is meant to acknowledge the good teacher-student mentoring that is already occurring as well as encourage peers to share advice and form partnerships to further support education. In September, which is National Hispanic History Month, the initiative revealed its “Bright Spots in Hispanic Education” program. The program focuses on 230 Bright Spots, or organizations that support Hispanic education. MORE Programs is one of those Bright Spots.
At Cal State LA, the Minorities Opportunities in Research (MORE) Programs support students of color working towards advanced science degrees. Among U.S. institutions, Cal State LA is the number one institution of origin for Latinos students going on to science and engineering Ph.D.’s, and the vast majority of those students participated in the MORE Programs, according to the National Science Foundation.
